The Portland Timbers host the Seattle Sounders in the latest match of the rivalry, Eli Mengem meets the players and fans behind these two Cascadia teams, including a chainsaw-wealding mascot at Providence Park
Now I’m not one who likes to continually bash MLS. There are things the league does I disagree with and I believe the quality of the play could be better. However, the one thing I have liked is their emphasis on supporter culture. It has helped create an environment within their stadiums that helps separate it from the other American sports leagues. Unfortunately, some of the supporter culture can come across as a little bit manufactured. Some of the chants seem forced and I feel like a lot of the rivalries they’ve established don’t have the history or importance that make derbies in leagues such as the English Premier League and La Liga as fierce.
There has been one rivalry that I have always admired in MLS though and that is the Timbers/Sounders rivalries. It just doesn’t seem forced. That’s probably because the two teams actually have a history to their rivalry unlike the Red Bulls and NYC FC who literally just manufactured their animosity out of thin air. Their intense rivalry is what makes this documentary so enjoyable. For a second you almost think these two teams play in Liverpool or Manchester the energy is that palpable. Hopefully this can naturally make its way across the leagu
In arguably one of the dumbest moments of Clint Dempsey’s impressive career, he put his team at an even greater disadvantage than they already were, by grabbing the referee’s notebook, throwing it, picking it up and tearing it to shreds. This all occurred while the ref was giving another Seattle player a red card for an extremely questionable violation. Please watch the video below:
Now, red cards happen, but not three in a game where you are already down a player due to injury. Apparently, this action will not soon be forgotten as it may qualify as “referee assault” which warrants a minimum of a three-month ban. Dempsey has lost his cool before, but not in this way. As a supposed leader of his team, there is no excuse for his actions and never a situation where they are acceptable. The question then becomes, what does this mean for his place in the USMNT if he is not playing club football for three months? Maybe he’ll go on loan to the Premier League or to Mexico? Only time will tell, but this is definitely the most idiotic soccer play you’ll see for a long-time to come.
Classy move by the Seattle Sounders organization. I have a feeling he will have a very successful career in the English Premier League. Maybe a couple years down the road when his career is winding down he can come back and end his career at Seattle.
This happened last night in the Seattle Sounders/LA Galaxy game after Omar Gonzalez fouled Clint Dempsey’s Sounder’s teammate, Deandre Yedlin, and Clint Dempsey took exception to it. The most surprising part is that all three of the players involved in the fracas are teammates on the USMNT. Hopefully this doesn’t hurt their relationship with each other when they put on the Red, White, and Blue but since they are professionals they probably are much better at compartmentalizing these things. This is incredible. These Make A Wish videos always get me because they clearly mean so much to these kids. It’s also great to see pro athletes humanized and show how big a role they play in the lives of kids. Like it or not, athletes are role models and the ones in these Make A Wish videos always live up to their billing. What makes this Make A Wish so special though is they actually let the kid in the game. Granted it was a friendly and he only played like thirty seconds, but imagine the memories this kid will have for the rest of his life. A brave kid such as him deserved this and I find myself becoming a Seattle Sounder fan just because of how well they enacted this scenario.
