This would big news if this turned out to be true. FIFA Executive Committee member Theo Zwanzige told the Sport Bild,”I personally think that in the end the 2022 World Cup will not take place in Qatar.” He makes this claim not based on the human rights violations but on the temperature problems in Qatar. Temperatures during the summer in Qatar reach very unsafe conditions and despite Qatar’s claims that their cooling technology will alleviate the problem there are many who believe that is a pipe dream. Because of this there has been a push to move the 2022 World Cup to the winter when temperatures in Qatar are cooler and more suitable for football. However, this has been met with great resistance from both the club teams and the IOC. The club soccer teams do not want to mess up their schedule in order to accommodate the new proposed date for the 2022 World Cup and the IOC does does not want its Winter Olympics to compete with a World Cup staged during the winter. The temperature problems coupled with the human rights violations and corruption allegations may finally be the nail in the coffin that forces FIFA to renege on its decision. If it did so then this would be a monumental moment in the history of the organization. It is not too late to fix their mistake. Let’s only hope FIFA finally gets off its ivory tower and makes a decision based on logic and not money.
