Robots That Can Play Soccer? Check out the RoboCup

Founded in 1997 with the ambitious goal to develop a robotic humanoid soccer-playing robot by 2050, the RoboCup is an annual robotics competition that sees robots play soccer against each other in an exercise of AI and applied robotics.

Each year of the competition also features a robot-on-human soccer game. And every once in a while, the robots will score a goal on the humans, just as they did this year in the above GIF.

Look at that brilliant ball movement! From the looks of it these robots are very far off from being Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi replicas but it is still amazing they know how to pass and shoot. It is fun to think about in 40 years what this RoboCup may look like. That small stadium may be replaced by a big football stadium in which tens of thousands of fans are watching robotic soccer players play against each other while being filmed by ESPN. It sounds far-fetched but technology has surprised us all before.
